Srinagar, Jan 21 (KNS): In order to sensitize young doctors of SKIMS and its medical college on latest clinical and medico-legal issues, the Department of Hospital administration, SKIMS organized a continuing medical education ( CME) programme tiltled “ Medical Practices in 21st Century” on 21-01-17 in SKIMS auditorium in which DM/MCH scholars, Senior Residents, Post graduates, junior Residents and interns participated.
The CME programme was addressed by Director SKIMS and Ex officio Secretary to Govt. Prof A. G .Ahangar, Dean Medical faculty, Prof. Altaf Kirmani, Medical Superintendent SKIMS and HOD Hospital Administration, Prof. Syed Amin Tabish and Principal SKIMS Medical College, Prof. Reyaz A. Untoo.
Quality Patient care and medical education has been the motto of SKIMS. The immense need for education does not end after completing undergraduate medical education, it continues even after graduate and post-graduate courses in each and every field of medical sciences. Every doctor has to continue efforts to keep him or her familiar with recent advances in various specialties and super specialties.
Medical Superintendent & HOD Hospital Administration Prof. Syed Amin Tabish in his address stressed the need of providing low cost treatment to the patients because 80% population can’t afford treatment in high class private hospitals. At SKIMS we have to create a community of the best people committed to leadership in alleviating human suffering caused by disease. Our endeavor would be to make SKIMS as an intellectual destination. We would give this society all we have – our imagination, courage, initiative insight and skills. We should focus on quality and core values such as caring and compassion should remain central to the practice of medicine. The relation between the doctor and society must be formed by these values. Global excellence in education calls for innovative curriculum and in research global excellence involves recruiting academic and professional talent and global excellence in service is build on the synergies between educational, research and practice. In all our actions we should put the patient first.

Director SKIMS Prof A. G. Ahangar said that In the last two decades there has been an increased focus on the issue of medical professionalism. In a rapidly changing and increasingly globalized context, the question of what it means to be a good doctor has become more complex but remains at the heart of medical education, training and lifelong learning. The programmes of these kinds are unique in that it both defines expectations for what it means to be a medical professional, as well as, overseeing professional development. The relationship between these functions presents a significant opportunity which needs to be carefully managed and fullyrealized.
Principal SKIMS MC Bemina Prof. Reyaz A Untoo laid emphasis on areas of focus of medical education, training and lifelong learning which include coherent approach to outcomes, proportionate use of an intelligent, integrated and instrumental regulatory model, focus on content, context and culture of learning of doctors and to develop and maintain their potential in providing safe, high quality patient care.
The programme was the first of its kind in SKIMS where young doctors from all categories participated and deliberated upon various aspects of patient care. Eminent speakers and experts from different disciplines addressed the CME and chaired the various sessions.
The prominent speakers included Prof. Dilip Kakru, Prof Shariq Massodi, Prof Abdul Wahid Khan, Dr Farooq A jan, Dr Altaf Gowher, Dr Ajaz Nabi Koul and Dr Haroon Rashid who spoke on the topics including Hospital infection control & biomedical waste management, Research methodology, Doctor-patient relationship, Medical documentation &medicolegal issues, communication skills, clinical approach to patients & our pitfalls and medical innovations respectively.
The programme will help in long way in improving patient care in SKIMS as young doctors are always first line of contact with routine and emergency patients. (KNS)
