Srinagar, Nov 19 (KNS): The Sikh Community in Kashmir on Friday celebrated the 552nd birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and the community in the Valley had planned a series of events to celebrate the birth anniversary of first Sikh Guru.

In a statement, issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), a spokesperson the United Kashmir Sikhs Progressive Forum (UKSPF) extended greetings on the special occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti by recalling his pious thoughts and noble ideas.

“The implicit message of love, compassion and sacrifice in the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev promotes spiritual progress of humankind. His thoughts encourage us to emulate the ideas of peace and brotherhood in our lives. Guru Nanak Dev Ji while leading the life of a simple householder emphasized upon service as a means to attain ‘Ek Omkar Satnam, Karta Purakh’,” reads the statement.

It reads that his thoughts and teachings continue to inspire millions across the world. “The motive of Guru Nanak Dev Ji was to build up an enlightened person and dignified society. This motive cannot be fulfilled by making people not only religious, but they should deserve to live a social and political life in a right way,” it reads.

While recalling the teaching of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, UKSPF welcomed the handing over of bodies of the two civilians killed in an encounter at Hyderpora in to their families.

“These times call for humanity and oneness, something that Sikhism has always preached for. The UKSPF also takes this opportunity to request the LG, J&K to issue directions to the administration to handover the body of third civilian killed in the same encounter as well,” it reads.

UKSPF also welcomed the decision of the PM of India for reopening the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor and repealing the three Farm Laws, keeping in view the sentiments of country's farmers on the special occasion of Guru Nanak DevJayanti.

UKSPF also requested to all on the special occasion today to follow the foot-steps of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and strengthen the spirit of harmony and unity in the society, fight against inequality and discrimination in the society. (KNS)
