‘First news reporter who focused on healthcare in rural Kashmir’

Srinagar, Feb 28 (KNS): Transparency International India (TII) Tuesday awarded senior journalist of The Tribune, Samaan Lateef for his fearless reporting on corruption and health sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
The TII conferred the award on Samaan Lateef during a conference on “Combating Corruption through Tools of Good-Governance” held here at IMPA in collaboration with J&K RTI Movement and School for Rural Development and Environment (SRDE).
The award was given away to Samaan Lateef in presence of Justice (Retd) Bashir Ahmad Kirmani and the TII head Rama Nath Jha and Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative Venkatesh Nayak.
During his respectable career, Samaan Lateef has covered health and corruption related cases for reputed newspapers like Greater Kashmir, The Pioneer and The Tribune.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Samaan Lateef is the first journalist to report on eye epidemic in 2010 summer agitation when 26 civilians were shot in eyes by security forces. Besides, he has been highlighting the advancements made by the Kashmir-based doctors in the field of medicine.
He is the first news reporter who has focused on healthcare in rural Kashmir. After his sustained campaign, the health department recently announced that the referral of patients from rural areas to tertiary care hospitals in Srinagar has gone down by 70 percent.
Samaan Lateef has won the best documentary award on Child Labour in 2009 at Bangalore. (KNS)
