Kulgam, Feb 28 (KNS) ; Health and Education Minister Sakina Masood Itoo today launched the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Campaign against cervical cancer in Kulgam, marking a significant step toward safeguarding young girls from the life-threatening disease across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Minister was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Shahzad Alam, ACR Kulgam, CMO Kulgam, MS District Hospital Kulgam, and other senior officials from the Health Department.
Addressing the media on the occasion, the Minister said that more than 5,000 beneficiaries will be covered in Kulgam district, while around 1,35,000 beneficiaries have been targeted across the Union Territory under the campaign. She further informed that a total of 192 vaccination centres have been established across the UT, including 11 Government Medical Colleges and 142 Primary Health Centres (PHCs), to ensure smooth and effective implementation of the programme.
Highlighting the seriousness of cervical cancer, she stated that over 80,000 women are affected annually across the country, with nearly 40,000 deaths reported every year due to the disease.
Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel“If girls up to the age of 14 years are properly vaccinated, thousands of precious lives can be saved every year,” she said, urging parents to come forward and ensure timely vaccination of their children.
The Minister added that awareness regarding the HPV vaccine is being actively spread through the education sector with the support of Anganwadi workers to maximize outreach and community participation.
On the sidelines of the event, she also congratulated the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team for their outstanding performance in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. Calling it a proud moment for the people of the Union Territory, she expressed hope that the team would clinch the title and bring further glory to Jammu and Kashmir.
Later, the Minister also inaugurated the High Dependency Unit at District Hospital Kulgam, further strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the district. (KNS)
