Srinagar, Aug 21(KNS): Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq on Friday alleged that restrictions on the historic Jama Masjid and attempts to silence its pulpit appeared to be part of the state policy, as he addressed the Friday congregation here after nearly two weeks.
In a statement, issued to KNS, Mirwaiz said he had been prevented from delivering the Friday sermon at the Jama Masjid and was also denied the opportunity to address the gathering of Khwaja Digar at Naqshband Sahib.
“Every opportunity to be there, I count as a blessing from Allah,” he said, adding that it was a time to exercise patience and continue the “good work” in whatever way possible.
Addressing those imposing the restrictions, Mirwaiz said the Jama Masjid pulpit had for generations played an important role in educating people and shaping society along religious and moral lines.

He said the pulpit had helped create awareness among people about both their rights and duties and had, whenever required, articulated their concerns and aspirations.
The Mirwaiz said the pulpit had also promoted peaceful coexistence among communities and strongly advocated minority rights.
He said its approach had consistently been guided by Islamic teachings and characterised by a peaceful, principled and dignified manner, with dialogue preferred over confrontation and issues taking precedence over individuals.
“Inshallah, it will continue to do so whenever given the chance. It is the legacy of my forefathers and the shared inheritance of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.(KNS).
