Srinagar, Jan 04 (KNS): A day after Shia community held protests across the Valley against the execution of its cleric Shiekh Nimr Al Nirm in Saudi Arabia, the authorities Monday imposed curfew like restrictions in the parts of Srinagar here to thwart the protests of the Shia members.
While talking to KNS, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Amit Kumar said, restrictions were imposed in the police station areas of Rainawari and Zadibal in the summer capital, Srinagar.
He said that the decision to impose restrictions in these areas was taken as a preventive measure to thwart protests by the Shia community members.
SSP further said that the situation in the curfew bound areas of Srinagar remained peaceful.
Reports reached to KNS said that Shia as well as well sunni’s held prayers in absentia in the Wagoora area of Khanda.
Almost three dozen Shia members were arrested at Srinagar’s press enclave who tried to march towards city centre Lal Chowk on Sunday against the execution of its cleric.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Minister for Youth Services and Sports Imran Ansari in a statement issued to KNS on Sunday and President of Anjuman-e-Shari-e-Shia, Aga Syed Hassan condemned the execution of Sheikh Ayatollah Baqir Nimr al Nimr by Saud family.
Meanwhile, on the second consecutive day, a complete shutdown was observed on Monday in several areas of Budgam district against the execution of the Shia cleric, eye-witnesses told KNS.
Pertinently, Sheikh Nimr al Nimr, the prominent Shiite leader of Qatif in Saudi Arabia who spoke against the family rule of the regime in the Gulf country, was among the 47 Muslim men executed by the regime.
He had participated in the Arab Spring protests in 2011. The execution of al-Nimr along with 46 other men, including Shia activists and Sunnis accused of involvement in deadly Al-Qaeda attacks, was announced by the Saudi interior ministry. (KNS)
