Record snow clearance by BRO reopens key J&K highways

Srinagar, Feb 1 (KNS): The Border Roads  Organisation (BRO) has completed rapid snow clearance operations across key highways in Jammu and Kashmir, reopening strategic routes well ahead of the usual schedule during the peak winter Chillai Kalaan period.

Traffic on the Zojila Pass section of the Srinagar–Kargil National Highway was fully restored on Saturday after BRO teams cleared up to four feet of accumulated snow. The pass had been closed temporarily due to heavy snowfall between January 22 and 27. Officials said motorists are advised to use anti-skid chains and drive cautiously.

The BRO also reopened the 112-km Kishtwar–Sansari road, clearing nearly 3.5 feet of snow in 72 hours, restoring access much earlier than the usual April–May timeline.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

For the first time since taking over the Mughal Road, BRO teams carried out mid-winter snow clearance operations at Razdan Pass and other elevations. Officials said the route could reopen within days if weather conditions remain favourable.

Rapid clearance was also achieved on the Bandipora–Gurez road, a lifeline for North Kashmir.

BRO said operations were conducted round the clock in sub-zero temperatures and avalanche-prone areas, ensuring strategic mobility, uninterrupted supply chains, and connectivity across Srinagar, Kargil, Doda, Kishtwar, Nowgam, Chokibal, and Machil.

The winter operations demonstrate BRO’s enhanced capacity to manage severe Himalayan conditions and maintain essential transport links.(KNS).
