Baramulla Sep 18 (KNS)– Senior PDP leader and former trade unionist Mohd Rafique Rather has been elected as the party's District President for Baramulla.
Rather was elected unanimously by delegates representing all seven constituencies of the district at a meeting held at Dak Bungalow here, party said in a statement.
A former President of the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), Rather joined the PDP in 2022 after quitting his government job to enter active politics. He is also an educationist and writer.
Known for his outspoken style, Rather has emerged as a prominent voice in North Kashmir in a short span and is credited with strengthening the party's organisational structure at the grassroots level in the district, the party sources said.

He contested the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections from Baramulla on a PDP ticket but lost to the National Conference candidate.
Rather is also a familiar face on national television, representing the party on various news channels.
His election is being seen as an effort by the PDP to consolidate its base in North Kashmir ahead of future electoral challenges, the sources added.
A party statement said Rather remains committed to the PDP's ideals of "peace with dignity, dialogue with purpose and welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir". (KNS)
