Present ration quota for BPL families inadequate: ANC’s Muzaffar Shah

Srinagar, April 10 (KNS): Awami National Conference senior vice-president Muzaffar Shah on Monday said that 4 and a half kg rice an d 1/ and a half kg flour per person for BPL card holders is very inadequate & not enough for these families to sustain their livelihood.

In a statement issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), he said that this quota does not last 2 to 4 days & the people do not want such relief anymore.

He said the govt must immediately consider reverting back to the practice of giving 11 kg rice per person followed earlier

He impressed upon LG administration and Union Home Minister to take a leaf out of the administrations of late Sheikh Abdullah & late GM Shah that provided 11 kg rice, 1 kg sugar, 2 kg flour, 3 kg charcoal, 10 kg firewood, 5 kg edible oil, 10/15 litres kerosine oil along with a specific quantity of cloth & salt to every family living under poverty lines through their ration cards.

“If those govts could manage that with great efficiency & transparency, what stops the present dispensation in reverting back to those guidelines that ensured that no soul remained unfed J&K,” he said.

He also said ANC will be forced to give a call for a Kashmir shutdown if this critical issue is not resolved forthwith.

“We hope LG administration pay heed and ensure a respectable livelihood for people living under poverty line by providing enough ration,” he said. (KNS)
