Srinagar, Aug 22 (KNS): Kashmir's chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Saturday made a strong pitch for the universal rights of political prisoners, asserting that dignity and due process cannot be held hostage to geography or political loyalties.
In a post on X, Mirwaiz said, "The rights of political prisoners are universal, beyond geography, government or political affiliation. Be it in India, Pakistan or anywhere in the world, those incarcerated must be treated with dignity and humanity, with access to proper medical care, family and legal counsel, and due process.

His remarks came against the backdrop of the ongoing furore in Pakistan over the medical treatment of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan.
Reacting to reports of alleged mistreatment of Imran Khan, the Mirwaiz underlined the importance of respecting judicial orders. "Court orders must be respected and rule of law upheld. Political differences can never justify denying a prisoner his or her fundamental rights," he said. (KNS)
