The assailants also decamped with the service rifle (INSAS) of the deceased cop,” said Dass. The slain policeman was identified as Constable Fayaz Ahmad (belt No. 415 of IRP 13th Bn), son of late Abdul Khaliq of Wadura Sopore.

Dass said the police have registered a case and started investigation. “However, the identity of the attackers could not be ascertained,” he said.
He also said that today’s attack being an isolated incident of its kind could not be linked to the reports making rounds about resurgence of militancy in North Kashmir. “I don’t see any such trend in North Kashmir,” he said, adding that from police records not much is evident that local boys in North Kashmir are joining militancy.
