Baramulla, Apr 26 (KNS): Continuing its anti-narcotics drive, police in north Kashmir's Baramulla district have detected illegal poppy cultivation and arrested a drug peddler from Tangmarg, officials said on Sunday.
In the first incident, a patrolling party at village Yall Pattan found that one Ghulam Rasool Yatto, son of late Mohammad Zaman Yatto, had illegally cultivated poppy on his agricultural land, a police spokesperson said.
The cultivation was intended for illicit trade and unlawful gain, posing a serious threat to the youth by promoting drug abuse, the spokesperson added.
A case under FIR No. 91/2026 has been registered under Sections 8 and 18 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and an investigation has been initiated.
In a separate action, a naka party of Police Station Tangmarg apprehended one person identified as Shaukat Ali, son of Abdul Rajak, a resident of Kataiya in Supaul district of Bihar, presently living at Chandilora Tangmarg.

The arrest was made near the J&K Bank ATM at Chandilora. During a search, approximately 20 grams of a charas-like substance was recovered from his possession, the spokesperson said.
A case under FIR No. 23/2026 has been registered at Police Station Tangmarg under Sections 8 and 20 of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway.
Baramulla Police reiterated its commitment to eradicating the drug menace from society and urged the public to share any information related to drug trafficking or illegal cultivation.
