Police foil Hurriyat (G)’s UNO march on JNU controversy

Srinagar, Feb 26 (KNS): Police on Friday foiled the protest march of Hurriyat (G) activists as well as its women’s wing protest march and detained dozens of its activist’s alongwith Zamrooda Habib and Yasmeen Raja.
The two protests were in Srinagar Lal Chowk area on different spots after the Friday congregation was ended.
As soon as the Friday congregation ended in Haji Masjid Maisuma, the activists of Hurriyat (G) tried to march towards UNO office against what they termed as “harassment of JNU students”.
The activists while staging protest were chanting slogans and were holding banners displaying ‘Release the students of JNU’.
The activists including Democratic Political Movement’s (DPM) chief coordinator, Shakeel Ahmad Bhat were intercepted by police and were taken into preventive custody here.
Yaar Muhammad Khan, spokesman of DPM told KNS that as soon as the party activists tried to march towards UNO, police intercepted them and detained scores of party activists including Shakeel Ahmad Bhat, Muhammad Imran, Bashir Parray, Lateef Ahmad and Fayaz Ahmad Ganaie.
Meanwhile, police also foiled the protest march of Hurriyat (G) women’s wing activists who tried to march towards UNO and detained scores of its activists.
According to eye-witnesses, police swung into action as the women protesters tried to march towards UNO against the arrest of SAR Geelani and the “harassment” of Kashmiri students in Delhi.

The protest led by, Yasmeen Raja and Zamrooda Habib said that the protest was organized to express solidarity with the JNU students, SAR Geelani.
She said that party will continue to raise voices against such kind of “intolerable actions”. “We won’t act as mute spectators but will continue to press for our demands,” she said.
However, police intercepted the protesters and detained more than a dozen of Hurriyat (G) women’s wing leaders, activists including Yasmeen Raja and Zamrooda Habib.
Reports said that the protest was also held in Pulwama district against the “harassment of JNU students”.
Scores of Hurriyat (G) activists took to streets and were raising anti-India slogans.
Meanwhile, Muslim League Jammu and Kashmir also staged protests and demanded that the students, SAR Geelani should be released.
Pertinently, Acting chairman Muslim League, Muhammad Yousuf Mir, Abdul Rashid Dar, District President Muslim League Pulwama, District President ML, Tariq Ahmad, Manzoor Ahmad of Lelhar and Sabzar Ahmad Dar of Islamabad were taken into preventive custody on Thursday evening.
Hurriyat (G) had called for protests after Friday prayers in Srinagar against the arrest of SAR Geelani and JNU students after a controversy erupted over an event organised at Jawaharlal University to remember Afzal Guru on his 3rd death anniversary. (KNS)
