One Day CME on Thyroid Update held in Jammu

Srinagar, Feb 02 (KNS): The Metabolic Syndrome-Prediabetes-Polycystic ovary syndrome (M P PCOS) Society organized one day CME ‘Thyroid Update’ on 27th January 2019 at Hotel Fortune Inn Riviera, Jammu.
The update was aimed to discuss and deliberate on various issues and current developments related to thyroidology primarily benefiting practitioners and physicians.
The function started with Inaugural ceremony with welcome address delivered by Dr. R P Kudyar. He after welcoming the chief guest, guest of honour, faculty and delegates informed them about the purpose this update. He also informed the audience about the proposal of making Jammu and Kashmir Endocrine Research Group (JKERG) to streamline the research activities in J &K. Prof.
Mohd Ashraf Ganie, Professor Endocrinology at SKIMS, Srinagar (former Addl Prof Endo & Metab AIIMS New Delhi), President of M P PCOS society talked about the burgeoning epidemic of various lifestyle diseases (technically called NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, PCOS, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia etc. in developing countries in addition to many communicable diseases and malnutrition.
He informed that there is urgent need to intensify research and awareness activities in this area and hence in this endeavor they formed the M P PCOS society. He gave brief presentation about vision, objectives, activities and future pans of the society.
The function was presided by Chief Guest for the occasion, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, a well-known practitioner who is also an eminent political figure of the state.

Dr. Kamal shared his experiences from practice and informed about contributions from the stalwarts in medicine.
Dr. Abdul Majid Siraj, a leading surgeon from UK and a prolific writer, was the Guest of Honour for the occasion. Dr. Siraj suggested that scientists and clinicians should work in unison to raise the standard of care in health sector.
The technical section of the CME commenced with lecture by eminent endocrinologist Dr. R.K. Marwaha (Maj general retd), a pioneer in thyroid diseases and imaging from INMAS New Delhi who spoke on management of thyroid nodules.
Dr. Narinder Kotwal (Brigadier) from Armed Forces Clinic, New Delhi and former head of endocrinology at Army Research and Referral Hospital, Delhi, delivered a lecture on interpretation of thyroid function.
Dr.Shariq Rashid Masoodi, Professor Endocrinology at SKIMS, Srinagar spoke pregnancy and thyroid disorders.
Dr. Ajay Aggarwal, popular endocrinologist at Fortis Hospital, New Delhi spoke about thyroid dysfunction in the newborn.
The sessions were followed by a brainstorming panel discussion with all speakers as panelist in addition to Dr. Sobia Nisar lecturer GMC Srinagar and Dr R P Kudiyar. This panel was moderated by Professor Mohd Ashraf Ganie with valuable inputs from all the delegates. Finally, Dr Suman Kotwal, young and enthusiastic endocrinologist of Jammu City, delivered the vote of thanks.
The event was concluded with high spirits and was a grand success. (KNS)
