Nowgam Langate residents decry water crisis

Langate, Nov 09 (KNS): Residents of Nowgam villages of Langate in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Monday complained they were without drinking water from last couple of weeks and the concerned department is watching mute spectator.

According to KNS Correspondent, inhabitants of Gamander Mohalla, Khuri Mohalla, Banjar Mohalla of village Nowgam in Langate constituency of Kupwara district are facing acute water scarcity with many people drinking unhygienic water of river Pharoo which poses them serious threat to get infected with water borne diseases.

According to the residents the women of this area are being forces to fetch the water from steams where animals too drink the water.

“There is no drinking water in our village and we are forced to drink contaminated water of canals which is unhygienic and health hazardous for us,” said Dr Nayeem u Rehman who is also Sarpanch of the area.

Another ward member Mushtaq Ahmad also complained of drinking water shortage. “We are being compelled to walk 2-3 kilometers everyday to fetch water from nalla Mawer.

Sarpanch, Nowgam Dr Nayeem Ur Rahamaan, said that Nowgam is providing water to major areas of district Kupwara, but we are being kept without safe availability of drinking water.

“If the issue of water shortage of Nowgam has not been addressed, in a timely manner, we will hit the roads,” he added. (KNS)
