Non-availability of drinking water sparks protest at Haril, Handwara

Handwara, July 30:(KNS) Inhabitants of Haril village of Qalamabad Mawer Friday staged a protest demonstration at Haril against the water shortage in the area.

The protesting residents said from the last three months we are without drinking water while the concerned department is paying no heed to our problems.

The protesting, Men, Women and Children hit the roads and blocked Haril-Handwara road for hours.

The aggrieved residents said from the last three months we are being told that water facilities to be provided early, but despite the passing of three years nothing has been done to provide potable drinking water to, the residents said.

 

"We are being forced to walk nearby streams to fetch the water and we are collecting the water from pits where animals too are drinking the water, said an elderly protesting woman.

 

She also said the health experts are stressing hygiene given the predicted III wave of Covid-19, but at the same time, we are being forced to drink contaminated water.

They also said we have informed the concerned officials several times but they are paying no heed towards our problems.

Protestors also said the local Panchayat is claiming they have spent crores of rupees for the development of the village, however, the village is facing a water crisis which is the basic need of the people.

They added the claims which are being made by the Panchayat are holding hot on the ground.

The aggrieved residents have appealed to Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Imam Din to intervene in the matter. (KNS)
