NLCO Core Group Charts Way Forward for Scientific Revival of Gilsar-Khushalsar

Srinagar July 13 (KNS): Core Group of the Nageen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO) held a crucial meeting today to review and deliberate on the ongoing restoration of the twin urban lakes of Gilsar and Khushalsar, which were recently handed over to the J&K Lakes And Waterways Development Authority (LCMA) by the J&K Government.

The members unanimously appreciated the landmark decision of the administration in transferring the responsibility of these orphaned lakes to a competent authority — a long-standing demand by environmental stakeholders. This move is seen as a major turning point in the revival of these critical water bodies.

The meeting acknowledged the recent deployment of a Watermaster dredging machine in Khushalsar by LCMA as a welcome and encouraging step. However, the group stressed that one machine is insufficient to address the scale of degradation and silt accumulation. To achieve meaningful progress on a fast-track basis, additional machines and continuous operations are imperative.

While the demarcation process has commenced, the members expected that the dredging process, under the supervision of technical staff will be carried out on scientific lines which will in turn
help to avoid the
risk of unintended consequences, such as aiding encroachment etc.

The Core Group resolved to submit a representation to concerned higher authorities for the immediate scaling-up
of restoration efforts.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelIt was emphasised that the revival of Gilsar-Khushalsar must not only remain sustained but also technically sound and inclusive of all stakeholders.

It was acknowledged that it is the wisdom and dedication of such esteemed individuals — from seasoned environmentalists to educationists and planners — that gives strength and credibility to these efforts. Their continued guidance will remain the cornerstone of scientific, community-driven conservation of Gilsar-Khushalsar and beyond

Together, we can turn these Urban lakes into thriving lifelines, once again, with the sincere efforts by all the stakeholders.(KNS)
