Srinagar, April 05: (KNS)  The Department of Electrical Engineering in collaboration with Innovation, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship Development (IIED) Centre, National Institute of Technology Srinagar (NIT) Tuesday organized a safety awareness workshop and acclamation ceremony for field workers, electrical engineers of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL).
 
Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Sehgal was patron of the event, while Managing Director, KPDCL Dr. Bashrat Qayoom (IAS) was the chief guest on the occasion.
 
Dr.M.A Bazaz (Head, EED), Dr. Saad Parvez,(Head, IIEDC), and Dr. Obbu Chandra Sekhar (Head, T&P) were the Co-patrons of the workshop. Dr.Assadur Rahman (Asst. Prof. EED) was the coordinator for the program.
 
In his key address, Managing Director, KPDCL Dr. Qayoom said they will not compromise on the safety of field workers and stated that the department is providing training to its field workers, to overcome untoward incidents in future.
 
Dr. Qayoom emphasized that a formal MOU would be signed between the two organizations for assisting the field workers to inculcate a mindset of safety so that frequent accidents are prevented during repair and fault finding.
 
He also expressed his gratitude to Dr.M.A Bazaz (Head, EED), Dr. Saad Parvez, (Head, IIEDC) for organizing a workshop on a relevant topic, which is the need of the hour.
 
 Dr. Qayoom said both awareness and training are key points on which KPDCL has focused over the past 2 years. Funds are being spent on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other Safety Devices for field staff working round the clock," he said.
 
Addressing the gathering, Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. (Dr) Rakesh Sehgal urged the UT government to take concrete measures to protect the lives of field employees, many of whom die or are injured in the line of duty.
 
"These accidents occur mostly when the line staff are fixing transmission lines on poles, especially during winters," he said.
 
Prof. Sehgal said both NIT Srinagar and KPDCL will work jointly in providing every possible support including awareness workshops for field employees.
 
In his message, Institute's Registrar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari said field workers should be equipped with the latest safety gear equipment including helmets, insulating gloves, safety harness belts, etc. to resist electrical shock resistance.
 
"Such steps would make the field workers safe from accidental touching of live lines and accidental charging of lines or equipment during shutdown activity," he said.
 
Prof. Aijaz Ahmad Zargar delivered his lecture on 'Importance of electrical protection system'. He said the primary function of the protective system is to detect and isolate all failed or faulted components as quickly as possible, thereby minimizing the disruption to the remainder of the electric system.
 
Chief Engineer, Maintenance, KPDCL Er Javed Yousuf Dar and Executive Engineer Maintenance, KPDCL Er. Javed Ahmad Dar delivered their special lectures to the participants.
 
They highlighted important issues like coordination between various sections of the department, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), etc.
 
Earlier, Dr. Saad Parvez,(Head, IIEDC) welcomed the guests and presented a brief introduction about the safety workshop.
 
He urged field workers to follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SoP) and guidelines from the department. In future, both NIT and KPDCL will conduct mock safety drills of SoP for the field staff under the proper supervision by safety officers," he said.
 
The event was followed by a 30-minute Q/A session. Chief Engineer, Maintenance, KPDCL, Er. Javed Yousuf Dar and Executive Engineer Maintenance, KPDCL Er. Javed Ahmad Dar answered several queries, and questions raised by students regarding the safety of field workers, SOP's and placement issues in KPDCL.
 
Faisal Nazir Mir, Samir Ahmad Ahanger, Mohammad Iqbal Malik, Abid Mushtaq, Azhar Mohi-ud-Din, and Muzamil Maqbool Najar were the student coordinators for the event.
 
A formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Asadur Rahman. He expressed his gratitude to Managing Director, KPDCL Dr. Bashrat Qayoom (IAS), Director NIT Srinagar Prof. Sehgal, and all speakers, KPDCL field staff, and students for making the event a grand success. (KNS)
