Srinagar, Dec 03 (KNS): Three Non Governmental Organisations, Hope Disability Center, HELP Foundation along with Handicap International, Thursday observed ‘Disability’ day across the state by holding cultural programmes and rallies.
The three NGOs pledged their support and promised to make all possible efforts to ensure a dignified life for special persons on ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’.
While an inclusive cultural event was organized at University of Kashmir here, a similar event was held at Dak Bunglow in Rajouri.
Both the events were attended by many dignitaries and thousands of people to show solidarity with the people with disabilities.
Kashmiri’s young Bollywood singer Saim Bhat enthralled by his singing at KU event, in Rajouri a similar event was held, followed by a rally to show support for physically challenged persons.
MLA Rajouri Qamar Hussain, Assistant Commissioner Revenue Rajouri, Paramjeet Singh were chief guest and guest of honour respectively at Rajouri, while as Deputy Director, Social Welfare Kashmir, Tabasum Kamili was chief guest at Kashmir University.
While speaking at KU, Director Drug de-addiction Centre, Kashmir, Dr. Muzzaffar Khan said that people with disabilities feel restricted to exercise their faculties on equal basis with others, particularly in the domains of employment, education, social as well as political participation.
Deputy Director, Social Welfare, Kashmir, said the government in Jammu and Kashmir is committed to promote empowerment, provision of opportunities and equal participation for the persons with disabilities.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Director Hope Disability Center, Sami Wani called upon Government departments, civil society, philanthropists, corporate sector and media to make concerted efforts for ensuring active and full participation of people with disability in the mainstream of national life.
The event commenced with a traditional song, Rouf and drawing competition for children with disabilities, followed by motivational speeches and skits by persons with disabilities and Kashmir Virus Group.
Some cultural and inspirational skits were performed by Shehjar Theater Group, K Virus Group, and CRC Students.
The closing remarks were provided by state project Manager, Handicap International, Mehran Khan, and the event was concluded by singing performance by Saim Bhat.
Mementos and Drawing Competition prizes for children with disability were by presented by Chairperson HELP Foundation, Nighat Shafi Pandit.
United Nations in 1992 declared December 3 as a day for persons with disabilities to promote awareness and mobilise support for such people. In 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, an international human rights treaty.
This year’s theme is ‘“Inclusion Matters: Access and Empowerment for People of All Abilities”.
Today one billion people around the world are living with disability. (KNS)
