NOWSHERA, Jan 17 (KNS): The Border Sports Festival concluded here in Nowshera, Rajouri district, on a high note, with a massive public turnout celebrating traditional sports, youth engagement, and community solidarity in the region.
The event was graced by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Minister for Youth Services and Sports, J&K, Satish Sharma, as chief guests. They were accompanied by the Secretary of the J&K Sports Council.
Marking a significant development for local sports, the dignitaries laid the foundation stone for new sporting infrastructure at the Nowshera Sports Stadium. The project includes a volleyball court, a practice pitch, and other allied facilities, aimed at bolstering sports amenities in border areas.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary affirmed the government's commitment to providing quality sports infrastructure in border and remote regions, on par with urban centres. "Focused investments in sports facilities are bridging the rural-urban divide, empowering our border youth to compete at the highest levels," he stated. He added that under the leadership of the Honourable Chief Minister, Jammu and Kashmir is undergoing a steady transformation in the sports sector, driven by inclusive policies and grassroots development.

The festival's highlight was a traditional Dangal (wrestling) competition, which saw Hamid from Iran emerge victorious after a series of intense bouts. Wrestlers from various regions showcased exceptional skill and strength, captivating the audience. The chief guests presented awards to the winners.
The sporting spectacle also featured enthusiastic competitions in Kabaddi and Tug of War, with strong participation from local teams. The events contributed to a vibrant atmosphere, supported by a large spectator presence throughout the festival.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, said, "Sports facilities are now being systematically extended to border areas to ensure equitable access and opportunity." He emphasized that youth in these regions are being empowered with infrastructure, coaching, and platforms comparable to those in urban areas, eliminating historical disadvantages. He reiterated the crucial role of sports in fostering health, peace, and positive engagement among the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. (KNS)
