Srinagar, July 14 (KNS): Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, on Monday said that the way restrictions were imposed on political leaders and workers on July 13 was deeply disappointing and an unprecedented move in India’s democratic setup.

“I have never seen such a thing in the federal structure of India where a nominated system shuts down an elected government,” Wani said, referring to the restrictions placed on political gatherings to commemorate July 13, 1931, a date widely observed in Jammu and Kashmir for its historical significance.

He said the LG administration, which controls only police, misused its authority. “From the top leadership to the smallest workers, even the media was completely shut down. What was the fear yesterday?” he asked.

“These 22 people stood up for our identity. The foundation of democracy was laid here on July 13, 1931,” he said.

He added that those who lost their lives in 1931 were not fighting against the Constitution of India but against the British Empire and oppressive rule. “They are given the status of freedom fighters across the country. Their sacrifice is remembered just like Jallianwala Bagh,” he added.

He further said that they have been commemorating this day for years to honor their sacrifice and to keep their memory alive for future generations.

Expressing confusion and concern over the restrictions, Wani said, “I don’t understand the reason behind this suppression. Either they weren’t against the British then, or we are being punished today for standing up against them.”(KNS)
