Srinagar, Nov 6 (KNS): National Conference leader and Baramulla MLA Javid Hassan Baigh on Friday criticised an elected representative for making personal remarks about someone's marriage, saying legislators should focus on public issues rather than ridicule individuals over private matters.
In a post on social media, MLA Baigh as per KNS said it was “disgusting and disgraceful” for an elected representative, entrusted with upholding the dignity of a lawmaking institution, to make someone's marital relationship a subject of public mockery.
He said an MLA was expected to raise issues of public importance, uphold democratic values and maintain the decorum of public office.
Drawing a distinction between political criticism and personal humiliation, Baigh said disagreements over public policies and political decisions were an integral part of democracy, but ridiculing someone over private relationships was not.
His remarks come amid political developments within the National Conference, including the resignation of Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi from the Lok Sabha, which was accepted by the Speaker with effect from November 3.
The party has also been witnessing internal differences, with a group of legislators's meeting underway with its leadership to discuss their concerns. (KNS)
