Srinagar, June 15 (KNS): J&K Peoples Democratic Party General Secretary Mohammad Khurshid Alam on Monday urged the Jammu and Kashmir Government to immediately initiate comprehensive preparations for the upcoming observance of Muharram-ul-Haram, saying that ensuring all essential civic and public services during the sacred month is both an administrative duty and a moral responsibility.
Alam said he has been contacted by numerous citizens across the Valley, particularly from Shia-majority areas, who have voiced concerns over a range of unresolved civic issues, including acute water scarcity, non-functional street lights, poor road conditions, sanitation deficiencies and erratic electricity supply.
Expressing concern over the grievances brought to his notice, Alam said the administration must act proactively rather than waiting for public inconvenience to surface during the days of mourning.
"People from several areas have approached me with genuine concerns regarding drinking water shortages, damaged street lights, sanitation issues and road connectivity. These are not ordinary administrative matters; they directly affect the ability of devotees to observe Muharram with dignity and devotion," he said.
PDP General Secretary stressed that Muharram occupies a unique place in the religious and cultural life of Jammu and Kashmir and attracts large congregations across the Valley, necessitating meticulous planning by all concerned departments.
"The sanctity of Muharram demands seriousness, sensitivity and preparedness. The government must ensure that every department functions in mission mode so that mourners and devotees are not subjected to avoidable hardships during these sacred days," Alam said.
Calling for a coordinated response from the Health Department, Power Development, Municipality and Traffic departments, he urged authorities to remain vigil and ensure all facilities for major gatherings and processions.

"Street lights along procession routes must be restored, uninterrupted drinking water supply must be guaranteed, roads leading to Imambaras and congregation points must be repaired and sanitation measures must be intensified. These are basic necessities, not extraordinary demands," he remarked.
Alam further called for the deployment of adequate medical teams, ambulances and emergency response units at major congregation points and emphasized the need for effective traffic management plans to facilitate smooth movement during religious events.
"The government must engage directly with local committees, religious organizations and community elders. Those on the ground understand the challenges best, and their input should guide the final arrangements," he said.
Reiterating that Muharram symbolizes sacrifice, justice and steadfastness in the face of adversity, Alam said the administration must demonstrate equal commitment in ensuring that all logistical and civic requirements are addressed promptly.
"The true measure of administrative preparedness lies not in official reviews and meetings but in whether people can observe Muharram peacefully, safely and without inconvenience. The government must leave no room for negligence and no excuse for complacency," he added.
Alam expressed hope that the authorities would respond positively to the concerns raised by the public and ensure that Muharram-ul-Haraam is observed across Kashmir in an atmosphere of reverence, peace and solemnity. (KNS)
