Srinagar, Nov 03 (KNS): The Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU) Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday postponed its first district-level Ulema meeting, scheduled to be held at Darul Uloom Raheemiyah in Bandipora on November 4, citing the continued house arrest of its patron, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
In a statement, the MMU said the Mirwaiz had remained under house arrest for the past three consecutive days, creating uncertainty over his participation in the meeting and leaving the organisers with no option but to defer the programme.
The meeting was planned as a follow-up to a one-day Ulema conference organised by the MMU in Srinagar on September 15, 2026, which was attended by more than 70 prominent religious scholars representing different schools of thought and regions of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The conference had deliberated on several social and environmental challenges, including inter-sect harmony, drug abuse, suicides and self-harm, mental and emotional distress among youth, irresponsible use of social media, weakening family bonds, moral decline and the growing disconnect of young people from religious and community institutions.

Environmental degradation and its consequences were also discussed, with participants emphasising the role of religious scholars in addressing these challenges through collective efforts.
The conference had decided to organise district-level meetings across Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh to widen the outreach of the initiative and translate the deliberations into action. The Bandipora meeting was scheduled to be the first in this series.
The MMU said all arrangements for Wednesday's meeting had been completed and prominent Ulema from the region were expected to participate.
Expressing regret over the postponement, the MMU termed the continued house arrest of the Mirwaiz unfortunate, saying the restrictions affected his religious and social responsibilities and also disrupted collective efforts by religious scholars towards social reform, unity and community welfare.
