MLA Gurez launches first tulip yard, Kala Zeera farms in valley

Gurez, May 13 (KNS); MLA Gurez Nazir Ahmad Khan on Wednesday visited the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Gurez Valley and hailed the centre's novel interventions in high-altitude agriculture, including the valley’s first tulip yard and domestication of Kala Zeera.

During a comprehensive field visit, the legislator inspected a lavender demonstration yard and a medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) germplasm bank, which KVK officials said are transformative steps toward crop diversification, sustainable agriculture, and agri-tourism in the remote tribal belt.

Terming the tulip initiative a "great success," Khan said it would boost tourism and create new economic avenues.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHe credited SKUAST-Kashmir Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai for his vision in enhancing yield and improving the quality of life of tribal farmers, while also praising the KVK Gurez team for their untiring efforts.

The Kendra is working to revive heritage crops and introduce organic technologies developed by SKUAST-K for the benefit of the farming community across Gurez.

Separately, an awareness-cum-input distribution programme was organized under an ICAR-funded Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) project, where tool kits to facilitate better farming and reduce drudgery for farm women were distributed free of cost among tribal farmers.(KNS)
