Srinagar, Feb 20 (KNS): On the occasion of the International Mother Tongue Day, Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Saturday expressed his deep concern over the condition of our mother tongue and said that the Kashmiri language was suffering indifference both at the hands of the people as well as the government.
Laying emphasis on the importance of the mother tongue, the Mirwaiz termed the indifference towards Kashmiri language as highly unfortunate and said while entire world was observing the International Mother Tongue Day and every country was taking steps to preserve their respective mother languages, the attitude of the Kashmiris towards their mother tongue as well as the policies adopted by the government towards the Kashmiri language were disappointing.
Stressing that the languages are the living signs of a nation’s literature, heritage, culture and civilization, the Hurriyat (M) Chairman said for any nation to keep its civilization and culture alive, promoting its mother tongue was essential.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The Mirwaiz said Kashmiri language has been spoken, written and read for thousands of years and remained unique identification of Kashmiri culture, tradition and customs.
However, he said Kashmiri language was not only disappearing from schools and colleges but also from the households of Kashmiri people, where this language has been reduced to second grade.
Stating that it was the duty of the people, parents, teachers, writers and intellectuals to take every step for keeping the mother tongue alive, the Mirwaiz said it was also the responsibility of the government to refrain from taking such steps which become reasons for turning our mother tongue less important and a reason for separating our mother tongue from our tradition and culture.
