Srinagar, Jan 23 (KNS): The gloomy winter landscape of the Kashmir Valley has come alive with a myriad of colours with the arrival of hundreds of winged visitors from as far as Central Asia and Europe.
The winged visitors begin to arrive in the valley in the first week of November because Kashmir offers them a more hospitable environment.
This winter the sight of Khushalsar (which otherwise was a dead waterbody) was very unusual than the previous winters.
This urban waterbody which was turned into a dumping ground and was on its last throes, saw a good number of migratory birds flocking in the lake.
Notably, after Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation’s Mission Ehsaas a cleansing operation of Khushalsar initiated through a community led approach has made this positive change happen.
NLCO’s president Manzoor Wangnoo who spearheaded the campaign has expressed his joy over the same and said migratory birds rediscover Khushalsar as their winter abode.
He said this is a miracle after 3 decades of vandalism that birds are flocking to the lake, a sight that was forgotten.
“A lot more needs to be done to restore & rejuvenate these urban waterbodies. We hope the present administration will initiate the revival process expeditiously”, he added.
He thanked stakeholders and SMC for help, LC&MA for working on navigation & above all divisional administration for the support that has made it possible..
