Srinagar, May 25 (KNS) : In a major breather to the school going children, the government has asked all the private and government schools to adhere to the school bag policy 2020 to reduce the weight of school bags for students in primary , middle, secondary and senior secondary schools.

Directive issued by the director school education Kashmir (DSEK) , Kashmir , has asked all the schools to abide by the policy released by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) in 2020.

Heavy school bags are a serious threat to the health and well being of students. These bags have severe adverse effects on growing children which can cause damage to their vertebral column and knees.

As such all the schools are directed to adhere to the revised guidelines of the school bag policy 2020 to reduce the weight of bags," the DSEK said.

Though the government had come up with the policy four years ago but failed to ensure its implementation on ground as the private schools continued to burden the small kids with unnecessary books.

The directive has come a days after the government announced the implementation of new education policy 2020 in the UT in coming months.

According to revised guidelines of the school bag policy, the directive by DSEK has asked the teachers to inform the students in advance about the books and note books to be brought to the school on a particular day and frequently check their bags to ensure that they are not carrying any unnecessary material.

The weight of the bag , as per the policy , should not be more than 1.6 to 2.2 kgs for the students of 1st and 2nd grade while as for the students of grade 3rd , 4th and 5th the weight of school bags should not exceed beyond 1.7 to 2.5 kgs.

"The weight of school bags for class 6th should not be more than 2.5 to 4 kg while for the students of 7th and 8th classes the weight should not be less than 2.5 to 4.5 kgs," the directive said.

The directive further asked the teachers to check the weight of school bags on daily basis.

"School management should also ensure the availability of pure drinking water in school so that students don't need to carry water bottles in their bags," the directive said.

Many parents , Kashmir News Service (KNS) spoke to said that the directive will give a major breather to the kids.

"Heavy school bags are no less than an agony for kids. This directive will relieve them atleast of this burden.

Hope this is the beginning of the implementation of the new education policy which prescribes only three subjects to the children studying in primary classes," a parent , Nazir Ahmad said.(KNS)
