Srinagar, Oct 21 (KNS): Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday called for developing Basohli into an international centre of art, literature and cultural exchange, saying the historic town should attract artists, writers and scholars from across the world.
In a message marking the conclusion of the fourth edition of Basohli Utsav, Sinha said efforts were underway to establish the town among India's prominent cultural centres, but much remained to be done.
“Our objective is very clear that Basohli should secure its place among the cultural capitals of the country and that various genres, from literature to art, should take root here,” he said.
The Lieutenant Governor said he wanted Basohli to emerge as a place where artists, writers and cultural practitioners from different countries could meet, exchange ideas and contribute to its artistic development.
Referring to the historic Basohli school of painting, Sinha said the town's artistic traditions represented an important part of the country's cultural heritage and needed to be preserved for future generations.
He said the renewed focus on Basohli's cultural identity should also create opportunities for contemporary artists and young people interested in traditional art forms.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The Lieutenant Governor directed officials to ensure that eligible artisans receive training, credit facilities, modern tools, design assistance and market access under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme.
He also encouraged young artists and entrepreneurs to use digital platforms and e-commerce to promote traditional crafts and reach customers beyond Jammu and Kashmir.
Sinha said preserving traditional art should go alongside innovation, enabling younger generations to develop new opportunities from inherited skills.
He appreciated the selection of “Shakti Parampara” as the central theme of this year's festival and called for continued efforts to preserve and promote the region's cultural traditions.
The Lieutenant Governor congratulated the Department of Culture, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Vishwasthali NGO, Divisional Commissioner and district administration for organising the festival.
He also appreciated the people of Basohli for their participation in the event.
Sinha said the town's future identity should reflect not only its historic artistic achievements but also the work of contemporary artists and artisans. (KNS)
