Says cops were enforcing Lockdown, follow up operation on

Srinagar, June 12 (KNS): Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh on Saturday said that Lashker-e-Toiba militant outfit is involved in an attack in Sopore area of north Kashmir earlier in the day in which two policemen and three civilians were killed.

 

 Four more persons, two policemen and civilian each, were injured in the attack which took place at main market Sopore at around noon.  

 

He said that the cops were enforcing Lockdown when incident happen however followup operation is on and these millitants will be neutralised soon.

 

Meanwhile police In a statement issued to Kashmir News Service said that at about 1200 hours, militants fired indiscriminately upon a police party “which was performing Covid enforcement duties at main market Sopore.” 

 

In this incident, four policemen and equal number of civilians received bullet injuries and were shifted to nearby hospital for treatment. Among the injured, he said, police personnel constables Showkat Ahmad and Waseem Ahmad succumbed to their injuries along with two civilians identified as Manzoor Ahmad Shalla of Shalimar Colony Sopore and Bashir Ahmad of Mahrajpora Sopore also succumbed to their injuries. 

 

“Preliminary investigation revealed that militants linked with LeT are involved in the attack. Soon after the attack the area was cordoned off and efforts are on to nab the militants involved in the attack.”

 

 Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. “Police is vigorously investigating all the circumstances of this incident,” it added. 

 

A wreath laying ceremony led by DGP J&K Dilbag Singh (IPS) was held at DPL Srinagar, where floral tributes were paid to the two constables. 

 

Many Police officials, other officers and family members of the policemen also laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid tributes to the duo. (KNS)
