Srinagar, April 2 (KNS): Kashmir university students Saturday held solidarity march with the local National Institute of Technology, Hazratbal, who were thrashed by non-locals and protested against the latter.
The KU students raised slogans against the NIT outstation students and demanded punishment from the authorities.
Clashes broke out in NIT on Friday afternoon after non-local students had thrashed local students and a courier boy. The non-locals were agitated by the celebrations of the local students over India’s defeat by West Indies in World Cup T20 semifinal on Thursday night.
The NIT authorities have shut the engineering institute following the clashes, and asked the local students to vacate the hostels.
The protesting KU students demanded action and said that such incidents should not happen in the NIT again.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
“We held a solidarity march in support of the local NIT students and protested against the unruly action of non-locals. A game is a game, we should not beat one another if we celebrate one team’s win against another,” the KU students said.
Meanwhile, the HRD ministry on Saturday claimed normalcy has been restored at NIT Srinagar.
Rajat Gupta, Director NIT Srinagar reassured the students, faculty and parents that the temporary situation arising out of tensions from disappointment at the outcome of the cricket match on 31st March had been overcome.
The situation on the campus and at the hostels was normal, and academic activities would continue on Monday, the statement said. (KNS)
