Khyber Aquaculture partners with J&K govt to modernise trout farming

Ganderbal, Aug 20 (KNS) Khyber Aquaculture, in partnership with the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Fisheries, has launched a specialised training programme for trout farmers aimed at promoting modern and sustainable aquaculture practices, officials said.

The programme, held in Ganderbal under Project No. 22 of the Trout Cluster Programme covering Ganderbal and Anantnag under the Holistic Agriculture Development Plan (HADP), brought together progressive farmers from Ganderbal, Bandipora and Srinagar.

The training focused on sustainable trout aquaculture and fish health management, with experts providing practical guidance on biosecurity, water-quality management, early disease detection, responsible aquaculture practices and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).

A key focus of the programme was to encourage farmers to shift from reactive treatment of fish diseases to preventive measures through routine water monitoring, stress reduction and early-warning systems.

The interactive sessions also allowed farmers to discuss challenges faced on their farms and explore practical measures to improve fish survival, growth and overall farm efficiency.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

"Capacity building is the cornerstone of a resilient trout sector. By fostering collaboration between farmers, government institutions, and technical experts, we can build a sustainable cold-water aquaculture ecosystem that supports livelihoods, food security, and rural enterprise development in Jammu and Kashmir," Khyber Aquaculture CMD Umar Tramboo said.

Jammu and Kashmir's natural mountain conditions provide significant potential for cold-water trout production, and the initiative seeks to improve productivity, strengthen value chains and create new opportunities for rural communities, the company said.

The initiative is part of Khyber Aquaculture's broader efforts to promote innovation, biosecurity and scientific practices in India's cold-water fisheries sector.
