Kashmir University Students Win Hearts with Service Camp at Kheer Bhawani Mela

Srinagar, June 22 (KNS) : In a heartwarming display of community service, student volunteers from the University of Kashmir became the unsung heroes of the annual Kheer Bhawani Mela on Monday, drawing widespread praise from devotees for their selfless outreach efforts.

The Department of Students' Welfare (DSW) set up a social service camp at the main entrance of the revered Kheer Bhawani Shrine in Tulmulla, Ganderbal, offering refreshments, drinking water, sherbet, and juice to the thousands of pilgrims who thronged the temple from across the country.

The initiative, part of the university’s broader community engagement mandate, saw officers, faculty, and student volunteers working tirelessly through the day. Devotees queued up not just for refreshments but also to commend the university's gesture, with many describing it as a "welcome break" from the summer heat and a "true reflection of Kashmir's syncretic traditions."

Lauding the spirit of volunteerism, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan said, "The University of Kashmir has always upheld the values of social responsibility and inclusiveness.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelOur engagement with society extends beyond academics. Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that universities must cultivate responsible citizenship. "Such outreach programmes provide students with opportunities to appreciate diversity and contribute to the common good," he said.

Dean Students' Welfare, Prof. Seema Singh, described the camp as a "meaningful act of service" that helps instil leadership, teamwork, and discipline among youth. Cultural Officer Dr. Shahid Ali Khan noted that the mela offers students invaluable exposure to the region's pluralistic heritage.

Student volunteers, visibly enthused, called the experience "enriching" and expressed a desire to participate in more such initiatives. The DSW extended its gratitude to all participants and devotees for their cooperation, as the university reaffirmed its commitment to fostering social harmony through service. (KNS)
