Kashmir’s mainstream camp welcomes Modi- Sharief meet

Hours after the meeting of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at Ufa in Russia was held, Kashmir’s mainstream camp welcomed it while hoping for sustainable peace in south Asia including Kashmir.
Former chief minister and National Conference working President Omar Abdullah was the first to comment over the meet, terming ice breaking a ‘good step.’
“I only hope that this time it is sustained over the long term for results. We expect that in spite of Pakistan not mentioning Kashmir at all that the issue of Kashmir will receive its due attention going ahead,’’ Omar wrote on Twitter.
Commenting further, he said, “We have seen too many breaks in this process to allow today’s announcements to excite us much here in the valley but it’s a good 1st step. And a little less chest thumping from spokespersons claiming victory because that’s a sure shot way to derail the entire process,” reads Omar Abdullah’s tweet.
The ruling PDP termed the meet a good step towards ending the decades old rivalry between the two countries, saying dialogue is the only way forward in resolution of the pending issue.
PDP general secretary Rafi Ahamd Mir said that the party hopes that next time during the meeting between the India and Pakistan leadership, the issue of Kashmir is taken and discussed.
The state Congress chief G.A. Mir said that no result oriented development was witnessed out of the meeting and that there were no expectations that a major breakthrough would be witnessed by the people of the both countries.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel“What we have seen and observed is that nothing concrete came out of the meeting between the two prime ministers. But at the same time we welcome the talks and same is the only way forward to resolve the pending issues,” Mir told KNS over phone.
He added his party is ready to support any such move of the government in which efforts are made to ensure peace on borders. “Though these measures will not be allowed to be taken while compromising the national integrity but we are ready to support the efforts which will make sure that peace is established in the region.”
CPI (M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami while commenting over the meeting of the two prime ministers said it is always better to hold dialogue to resolve the issues amicably. “But nevertheless it has to be structured and sustained process. It cannot be just casual. Dialogue between India and Pakistan is welcome but same cannot be a sidestep process-it has to be structured and sustained,” Tarigami said.
He maintained that the process of dialogue is in the interest of not only Kashmir but also for the whole of the region of South Asia. “Both countries must realise that not talking will create a perturbed situation which would not be in the interests of people. Time is running out, both the countries have missed the opportunities in past. We should not miss it time and again. My appeal to the leadership of both India and Pakistan is to seize the opportunity and move forward,” Tarigami said.
