Kashmir’s Huriyat camp pins hope over Modi–Sharief meet

With the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif scheduled to meet on July 10, on the sidelines of the 15th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Ufa, Russia, Kashmir’s Huriyat camp pins hope of better Indo Pak relations.
The Huriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani termed the meet not vital for Kashmir, saying without the inclusion of the people of Kashmir, the dispute can never be resolved by the two countries bilaterally. However, the amalgam maintained that it wants better relations between India and Pakistan as same could play a vital role in Kashmir resolution. “Though we believe that such meets can in no way resolve Kashmir but we hope that the cordial and the better relations between both India and Pakistan can play an important role in resolving Kashmir as per the aspirations of the people of the region. We aren’t the war mongers. We want India and Pakistan to have friendly relations,” Huriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar told KNS.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Also the Huriyat led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expresses optimism that the meet could yield better results and Kashmir could pave way for the resolution of the long pending Kashmir dispute. “Let the good sense prevails over both the countries and they develop a cordial relationship. Such a development is not only in the interest of both India and Pakistan but also for the people of Kashmir. We know that in one go the meet cannot resolve the pending issues but at the same time we hope that such attempts become result oriented and fruitful,” Huriyat (M) spokesman Shahid-ul- Islam told KNS.
Pertinently, the Modi – Sharief meet will be first bilateral meeting between both the leaders after they met last year in May, when Sharif had attended Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. They did meet and even had a cursory ‘handshake’ during the last South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit at Kathmandu in November. (KNS)
