Srinagar, June 10 (KNS): Parts of Kashmir Valley on Friday observed a shutdown to protest against the derogatory remarks made by now suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma against the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) even as mobile internet was also suspended in the summer capital and parts of Chenab Valley as a precautionary measure.

Reports reaching Kashmir News Service (KNS) said that shops and business establishments in various Srinagar parts were closed, while City Centre Lal Chowk observed a complete shutdown.

They added that private vehicle were seen plying on the roads in Lal Chowk, Batamaloo and other adjoining areas, while schools and offices remained open.

Reports also said that many of Kashmir valley including Uri, Baramulla, Anantnag, Pulwama, and other parts also observed shutdown on Friday to protest against the derogatory remarks.

Meanwhile, reports said that mobile internet was also snapped in Srinagar as a preventive measure, while Friday congregation prayers were disallowed at historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar.

People expressed anger and resentment over the remarks made by the BJP leader, while Imams and Khateebs also condemned and denounced the blasphemous remarks during their sermons on Friday prayers across Jammu and Kashmir.

Notably, BJP spokesperson (now suspended), Nupur Sharma's had made derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad (SAW) during a TV debate, which evoked strong resentment and protests by the Muslim community across the country and abroad.

BJP and the central government also faced a backlash from the Muslin countries and the Middle East including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Iran over the derogatory remarks, prompting the BJP to suspend Nupur Sharma and expel another leader from the party.

Meanwhile, curfew was imposed and internet was also snapped in major towns of Chenab Valley after protests over objectionable social media posts in the area.

The administration imposed curfew in Bhardawah town yesterday evening following series of protests in the town. Restrictions, banning the assembly of three or more people, have also been imposed in Ramban district.

The army has been called in to conduct a flag march in the town.

Meanwhile, inspector general of police Kashmir zone, Vijay Kumar told KNS that the overall situation in the Valley remained peaceful after Friday prayers as there was no untoward incident reported from anywhere. (KNS)
