JUIAK Demands Ban on Liquor in Ladakh, Criticizes New Excise Policy

Kargil, June 07 (KNS) : Jamiat Ul Ulama Isna Asharia Kargil (JUIAK) has strongly opposed the new Excise Policy introduced in Ladakh and demanded an immediate ban on the sale and distribution of liquor in the Union Territory.

Addressing a press conference, JUIAK General Secretary Sheikh Ibrahim Khalili and Political Incharge Sajjad Kargili expressed serious concern over the administration's decision to open liquor shops in Ladakh. They urged the UT Administration to immediately withdraw the move, stating that the promotion of liquor sales is against the cultural, social, and religious values of the people of Ladakh.

The leaders said that liquor has no place in Ladakhi society and that opening liquor outlets under the new excise policy would have negative consequences for the younger generation and society at large. They also warned that if liquor is allowed to be sold or consumed openly in Kargil, the organization, along with the public, would be compelled to launch democratic and peaceful protests against the move.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Criticizing the administration's justification of regulating substance abuse, JUIAK leaders described the opening of liquor shops as an illogical and counterproductive step. They argued that introducing another intoxicating substance cannot be a solution to reducing drug addiction and substance abuse.

JUIAK further announced that its leadership will soon meet the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh and submit an official representation demanding the withdrawal of the policy and a complete ban on liquor in the region.

The organization also appealed to all religious scholars, community leaders, and social organizations to use the upcoming holy month of Muharram as an opportunity to raise awareness among the public about the harmful effects of drugs and liquor. They emphasized the need for collective efforts to protect society, especially the youth, from the growing menace of substance abuse. (KNS)
