Jammu gets India’s only functional alkaline battery plant

Srinagar, Apr 22 (KNS): In a significant boost to ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ ambitions in the energy storage sector, Eveready Industries India Ltd on Wednesday commissioned India’s only operating alkaline battery manufacturing facility in Jammu’s Samba district.

The state-of-the-art greenfield unit, set up with an investment of approximately ?200 crore, was inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, in the presence of Mr Mohit Burman, Promoter and Non-Executive Director of Eveready.

“With an investment of ?200 crore, this plant will create local jobs, boost ancillary units, generate opportunities for women and youth, and make a significant contribution to the economic growth of J&K,” the LG said.

The facility has an annual installed alkaline production capacity of 456 million units and a peak production capacity of 360 million batteries per year. Officials said the plant will help reduce India’s import dependence on high-performance batteries, enhance supply chain resilience, and improve margin efficiencies.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Eveready, which commands over 52 per cent market share in the domestic dry cell battery segment, said the new plant will generate over 500 direct and indirect employment opportunities in the Jammu region at full scale. The company also plans to use the facility for white labelling and to serve export markets.

“This marks a significant milestone not just for Eveready, but for the country’s evolving energy landscape. As consumer demand shifts towards high-performance, power-intensive devices, the need for advanced battery technologies has never been greater,” said Mr Anirban Banerjee, CEO of Eveready Industries India Ltd.

The alkaline portfolio of the company is steadily approaching 20 per cent market share. The Jammu facility is designed with a 1 MW rooftop solar installation, rainwater harvesting system of 275 KLD, and operates on a zero-discharge basis, officials added. (KNS)
