Jammu, March 3 (KNS): The Jammu Division of Northern Railway achieved a historic milestone on Tuesday by transporting rare zoo animals by train from Jammu to MGR Chennai Central for the first time.
Under the leadership of Mr. Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, rare zoo animals — including two leopard cats and two black bears — were successfully dispatched from Jammu to Chennai in Tamil Nadu using a special parcel coach (VPU) attached to Train No. 16032.
The animals are expected to cover the nearly 2,800-kilometre journey in approximately 54 hours, significantly shorter than road transport. Officials described the journey as one of the longest wildlife transfers from north to south India, setting a new benchmark in safe and organized animal transportation.
A dedicated team of zoo doctors and wildlife experts is accompanying the animals throughout the journey to continuously monitor their health and safety. Strict standards prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) have been adhered to, including proper arrangements for food and water to ensure animal welfare.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The special parcel coach departed from Jammu Railway Station and will reach MGR Chennai after traversing multiple states en route.
Highlighting the achievement, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Mr. Uchit Singhal said, “The Jammu Division is moving forward with new initiatives every day. Previously, 23 exotic bulls were transported from Bengaluru to Kashmir by rail. In another initiative, zoo animals are now being transported to MGR Chennai by rail. Rail transport is safer than road transport and ensures a stress-free journey for the animals even in adverse weather conditions. A team of experienced veterinarians and keepers has been deployed to monitor the animals’ health throughout the journey.”
Officials said such organized transportation showcases the evolving capabilities of the railways in handling specialized logistical operations.(KNS)
