Srinagar, Aug 17 (KNS): The solid waste management and sanitation model implemented by Jammu and Kashmir during the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2026 is set to be replicated across states and Union Territories, officials said on Monday.
The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti's Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has endorsed a concept note on Solid Waste Management and Innovations prepared by the Directorate of Rural Sanitation, Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, J&K.
The concept note has subsequently been circulated among all states and UTs for examination and adoption of suitable interventions, they said.
The J&K model incorporates terrain-specific sanitation solutions, decentralised waste management, scientific waste segregation and processing, real-time monitoring and waste-to-energy initiatives.
It also includes reusable utensil systems, water ATMs and technology-enabled grievance and feedback mechanisms aimed at improving sanitation and reducing the environmental impact of the annual pilgrimage.

The Centre has advised states and UTs to examine the interventions implemented in J&K and replicate or adapt them according to their local requirements and preferences.
Officials said the national-level recognition underscores J&K's efforts towards sustainable sanitation and environmentally responsible management of large-scale pilgrimages.
The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra attracts lakhs of pilgrims every year and presents significant challenges in managing waste and sanitation facilities in the difficult Himalayan terrain.
The adoption of the J&K model by other states and UTs is expected to encourage locally appropriate and sustainable solutions for waste management during major religious gatherings and other high-footfall events.(KNS).
