Anantnag, Oct 13 (KNS): The District administration, Anantnag today organised a function in the premises of Civil Defence Anantnag to celebrate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, Mr. Mohammad Younis Malik was the chief guest on the occasion.
The function was attended by Tehsildar (Hqr) to DC, Tehsildar Anantnag, Deputy Controller Civil Defence & SDRF, Chief warden, Tassaduq Rashid, a large number of wardens and volunteers.
On the occasion, the DC said that Anantnag is prone to multiple disasters and concerted efforts need to be put in place for disaster mitigation. He said that the unplanned settlements have, to a large extent, exacerbated the proneness of floods because of the encroachments on the main drainage systems. Climatic changes and other anthropogenic influences have further added to the risk.
“The purpose of observing this day is to sensitise the public about the capacity building methodologies that need to be adopted to minimise the impact of any disaster - floods, snow avalanches, thunder bursts, earthquakes, land and mud slides, etc” said the DC.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
He further added that prevention, preparedness, rescue and relief are the main aspects of any disaster management strategy. In this regard, the District Disaster Management Authority has formulated a plan which has conceived all the strategies to meet any eventuality.
Regarding the involvement of the volunteers in the disaster management, the DC said that block and village level committees have been constituted where the volunteers can play a pivotal role in meeting any eventuality. For that, he called upon the volunteers to muster enthusiasm and dedication so that loss of life is minimised during any natural disaster.
The Deputy Controller Civil Defence and Tehsildar (Hqr) to DC also spoke on the occasion and briefed about the mechanisms being conceived so as to make the existing system more robust and effective.
Later, a mock drill exercise was also conducted where different aspects of risk reduction and disaster mitigation activities were undertaken. (KNS)
