Ahmedabad: South Africa ended India’s 17-match winning streak in ICC white-ball tournaments with a commanding 76-run victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Chasing 187 in their Super Eights opener, India were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs — their biggest defeat by runs in T20 World Cup history.
India’s batting collapsed early. Ishan Kishan fell for a duck in the first over, while Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma also departed cheaply. The top order failed to handle the disciplined South African bowling attack, and the innings never recovered. At 51 for 5, the contest was almost sealed.
Marco Jansen led the charge with a brilliant spell of 4 for 22, troubling the batters with pace and bounce. Keshav Maharaj struck three times in one over to shut the door completely on India’s hopes. Corbin Bosch also removed key players, including Suryakumar Yadav and Washington Sundar.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Earlier, South Africa recovered strongly after being reduced to 20 for 3. Jasprit Bumrah bowled superbly, picking up 3 for 15, while Arshdeep Singh also struck early. However, David Miller turned the game around with a fluent 63 off 26 balls. He was well supported by Dewald Brevis in a crucial 97-run partnership. In the final overs, Tristan Stubbs smashed 44 not out to push South Africa to a strong total of 187 for 7.
Despite Bumrah’s disciplined bowling at the death, India conceded 20 runs in the final over, which proved costly.
The heavy defeat dented India’s net run rate and left them with little margin for error in the remaining Super Eights matches. Meanwhile, South Africa registered a memorable win and strengthened their position in the tournament.
