Srinagar, Dec 12 (KNS): The Indian Army, in collaboration with the Pune-based NGO ASEEM Foundation, initiated a Capability Building Tour (CBT) from Kupwara to Pune for a group of female cricketers.
The Army in a statement issued to KNS said that these 16 players emerged from the Kupwara Women’s T-10 Cricket Championship, an initiative by the Indian Army to showcase the cricketing talents of Kupwara girls and instill a sports spirit among women in the region.
"The 14-day tour, running from today until December 26, is designed to expose young female cricketers to a world-class cricket environment. It provides them with opportunities to refine their skills and interact with teams from Maharashtra, as well as various national and Ranji players.
The Pune tour not only serves as a platform to exhibit their talents but also facilitates learning from women’s teams beyond their state. This experience will be particularly enriching for the Kupwara girls, many of whom are venturing outside the district for the first time. The matches are scheduled at national-level stadiums, and the team will explore tourist attractions.
The inaugural edition of the championship in 2021 featured only six teams. However, due to the persistent efforts of the Indian Army to uplift women in Kashmir, the team count increased from 6 to 14 in the second edition of 2022. This year witnessed a remarkable rise in team participation from 14 to 20.
The Indian Army remains steadfast in its commitment to engage, uplift, and empower the women of Kupwara, fostering physical strength and excellence in all aspects of life, including sports.
