India bounced back strongly from their disappointing defeat to South Africa, crushing Zimbabwe by 72 runs in Chennai to keep their T20 World Cup hopes alive. The emphatic win not only boosted India’s net run rate but also set up a virtual quarterfinal clash against West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday (March 1). The result also confirmed South Africa’s place in the semifinal.
Batting first, India produced their most dominant performance of the tournament, piling up a massive 256/4 — the highest total of this edition so far. Sanju Samson returned to the top of the order and made an immediate impact, smashing two sixes in the opening overs. Abhishek Sharma, who had been searching for form, finally found his rhythm as India raced to 46 without loss in just three overs.
Samson fell for a brisk 24, but the momentum never dipped. Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav kept the scoreboard ticking, while Abhishek continued to find the boundaries. India stormed to 80 in the Powerplay, taking full advantage of Zimbabwe’s poor fielding and lack of spin options early on. Abhishek brought up his half-century before being dismissed, but India were already on course for a 200-plus total.
In the death overs, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya launched a brutal assault. The duo added 80 runs in the final five overs, tearing into the Zimbabwean bowling attack. Hardik finished unbeaten on a 23-ball fifty, clearing the ropes off the final two deliveries to take India past 250.

Chasing a daunting 257, Zimbabwe started cautiously. Only 25 runs came in the first four overs, reflecting the pressure of the target. Brian Bennett showed resistance with an impressive knock and even struck Jasprit Bumrah for a towering six.
Axar Patel, who replaced Washington Sundar in the XI, broke the opening stand after the Powerplay. Later, Sikandar Raza and Bennett tried to rebuild, adding valuable runs, but the steep required rate made the task nearly impossible.
Bennett played a fighting innings, finishing unbeaten on 97, just three runs short of a deserved century. However, India’s bowlers kept things under control. Arshdeep Singh starred with the ball, claiming three wickets and delivering pinpoint yorkers at the death.
Zimbabwe ended on 184/6 in 20 overs, falling 72 runs short as India sealed a crucial win.
