Srinagar, Aug 21 (KNS) JKPC General Secretary and President All J&K Shia Association Molvi Imran Reza Ansari has criticised the latest electricity tariff hike in Jammu and Kashmir, questioning the gap between the National Conference’s electoral promise of 200 units of free electricity and the reality now facing consumers.
Reacting to the 6.83% increase in electricity tariffs, Molvi Imran Ansari said, “The NC sold the dream of 200 free units. People trusted them, and yes, perhaps they were at fault for taking political promises at face value. Now the tariff is set to rise by 6.83%. The irony writes itself: the promise was free electricity, the reality is a bigger bill. That’s not a plot twist, that’s politics catching up with the consumer.”
Molvi Imran Ansari said the issue was not simply the tariff percentage but the political commitment that accompanied the promise. He said 200 units of free electricity was presented to voters as a significant relief measure, creating an expectation among households that their electricity burden would be reduced.
“People were asked to trust the promise, and they did. It is therefore reasonable for people to ask what happened to that promise when, instead of the promised relief, they are now being confronted with an increase in tariffs,” he said.

He added that the government may have its explanations for the tariff revision, but consumers ultimately experience such decisions through their monthly bills. According to him, financial and administrative difficulties cannot become a permanent explanation for political promises that helped secure the people’s mandate.
“People understand that governing is not easy. They understand that there are financial constraints and inherited problems. But accountability works both ways. If people are expected to remember what the government inherited, the government must also remember what it promised,” Molvi Imran Ansari said.
He said the government should clearly explain when and how the promised 200 units of free electricity will be implemented and what protection ordinary consumers will have from the impact of the latest tariff revision.
“People trusted the promise. Now it is the government’s turn to honour it,” he added. (KNS)
