Srinagar, Apr 4 (KNS): A private hospital in Gurugram has reported successful outcomes in patients from Jammu and Kashmir undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), a procedure commonly referred to as brain pacemaker surgery, for advanced neurological disorders.
Medanta The Medicity said the procedure involves implanting electrodes in specific areas of the brain to regulate abnormal signals. It is used in advanced cases of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, refractory epilepsy (adult onset), essential tremor, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), according to Dr Anirban Deep Banerjee.
The hospital has introduced AI-based adaptive DBS technology, which the doctor said records brain signals and automatically adjusts stimulation based on real-time brain activity and patient symptoms, improving treatment response over time.
Highlighting the burden of neurological disorders in the country, Dr Banerjee said these conditions contribute significantly to disability in India, where access to advanced treatment remains limited.

The hospital said patients from Jammu and Kashmir have also benefited from the procedure. Harmeet Kour from Jammu reported improvement in movement, while Gandharv Chand from Udhampur said his tremors reduced, helping him resume daily activities.
Medanta stated that its DBS programme, with more than 300 procedures performed over 15 years, includes remote programming facilities that reduce the need for repeated hospital visits for patients from outside major cities.
Global Health Limited, which runs the Medanta network, operates multiple hospitals across India and provides services in over 30 specialties. The group was founded by Dr Naresh Trehan. (KNS)
