 Srinagar, May 27 (KNS): HELP Foundation J&K covered 25 widowed families of DardporaKupwara under sheep livelihood initiative. The project was inaugurated by chairperson Help Foundation, NighatShafi to provide livelihood support to the conflict widows of Dardpora, Kupwara in form of around 80 sheep (ewes).
“Majority of this ‘village of widows’ are living with number of orphans whom they have to support with basics of life amidst inadequate income,” NighatShafi said.
“Favourable agro-climatic conditions and other natural endowments satisfied us to provide sheep rearing as core activity for their livelihood support,” She adds.
The project was commenced in close coordination of district Social Welfare Department and Sheep Husbandry Department Kupwara.

The technical support and medical clearance of ‘Indo-Aus Marino Crosses’ sheep breed was carried out by district Sheep Husbandry Department under the supervision of Dr.Altaf.
This livelihood mission was started after a thorough survey of the area with regard to the socio-economic up-liftment and rural work-culture. HELP Foundation has adopted the village since November after providing a couple of skill development centres, where girls acquire free trainings in handicrafts, tailoring, and knitting. Apart from this the affected families were provided ‘winterization packages’ and free utensils in the beginning of this year.
“Majority of widows face reduced poverty and unviable livelihood issues due to which their income status dips to the worse. This initiative will surely help utilise the local resources for sustainable livelihood, District Program Officer HELP Foundation, Nazir Dar said. (KNS)
