Srinagar, June 1 (KNS): Minister for Social Welfare and Science and Technology, Sajjad Lone Wednesday said that the government will find out reasons for rising psychiatric diseases among women.
Replying to a written question by PDP legislator, Anjum Fazili the minister said that the government had already kept a provision for shelter homes for the victims of domestic violence under J&K Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2010.
Fazili had asked about the rising psychiatric women patients and shelter homes for them.
“There are12 Nari-Niketans functioning in the state which are providing various facilities-free boarding, lodging, education, health care etc to female orphans and all other destitute women across the state,” he informed the Lower House.
Fazili said that the increase in mental diseases was due to rise in the domestic violence cases in the state.
“Flow of women patients at Govt Psychiatric Hospital Srinagar was more as compared to males,” she said.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
In her supplementary question, Fazili informed the house that the victims of domestic violence were going through trauma and require immediate counseling.
“I have met few women at SMHS who were admitted in the burn ward and they were hesitant in revealing the truth. They fear the consequences of revealing truth to the government or police. They require counseling so that they can have the confidence to live with dignity,” she said.
In reply, Lone said that it required multi-dimensional approach which will cover all aspects related to rehabilitation of victims of domestic violence.
Fazili said whether the government had any proposal for establishment these shelters at district level. In reply, lone said that the shelters will be a one-stop centres for all these victims. (KNS)
