Srinagar, Mar 15 (KNS): In a proactive move aimed at curbing the alarming rise of substance abuse among the youth in the Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Territory government, led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, has embarked on a series of initiatives focusing on promoting sports and youth engagement.

Recognizing the critical role sports can play in steering the youth away from harmful activities, the government is implementing various schemes and policies to foster a culture of athleticism and healthy living.

A senior official involved in the matter highlighted the government's commitment to leveraging sports as a powerful tool in combating the drug menace. “Sports can serve as a potent antidote to the destructive influence of drugs on our youth. Through these initiatives, we aim to encourage parents to actively involve their children in sporting activities as a means to safeguard their well-being,” the official told KNS.
Under the comprehensive policy framework devised by the government, emphasis was placed on the construction of playing fields across the Union Territory, providing young people with accessible venues for recreational pursuits.

Additionally, specialized teams were tasked with spearheading efforts to promote youth engagement through sports while integrating components such as cultural activities, career counseling, and drug de-addiction programs into their initiatives.

Moreover, significant investments have been allocated for the development of sports infrastructure, including facilities like gymnasiums and entertainment halls, to facilitate widespread participation in sporting events.

Speaking on the necessity of this approach, another senior government official emphasized the urgent need to address the prevalence of drug availability in the region.

“The pervasiveness of drugs poses a grave threat to our society, particularly our youth. By channeling their energies into sports, we can effectively counter this menace and foster a healthier, drug-free environment,” the official remarked.

The concerted efforts of the government complement the rigorous actions undertaken by law enforcement agencies, as evidenced by the recent arrest of more than 4837 drug peddlers by the Jammu and Kashmir Police over the past three years.

Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, R R Swain reiterated the commitment to intensify the crackdown on drug trafficking networks, urging community members to collaborate by reporting any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.

Reflecting on the gravity of the situation, observers underscored the urgent need for collective action to address the escalating crisis of substance abuse in Kashmir.

“For too long, our youth have borne the brunt of this epidemic, robbing them of their potential and jeopardizing their future. It is imperative that we unite to tackle this scourge head-on before it irreparably damages another generation,” remarked one observer.

With prevention emerging as the linchpin of the government's strategy, efforts are underway to provide comprehensive support to individuals grappling with addiction.

Recognizing the complexity of overcoming substance abuse, authorities stress the importance of a multifaceted approach encompassing education, counseling, and community support to effectively combat this pressing public health challenge.(KNS)
