Govt Allows 8th Muharram Procession for Second Consecutive Year

Srinagar, July 15 (KNS): For the second consecutive year, the Srinagar District Administration permitted the 8th Muharram procession on Monday, a decision marks a significant continuation of last year's policy, allowing the religious observance to proceed without interruption.

The procession, which holds deep spiritual significance for the Shia Muslim community, saw thousands of participants. The marchers, dressed in black and carrying banners, moved solemnly through designated routes in the city. The authorities ensured tight security measures were in place to maintain peace and order throughout the event.

Extensive arrangements were made by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, District Administration Srinagar, and Jammu and Kashmir Police to ensure the event's success. The municipal corporation took charge of sanitation and cleanliness, ensuring the procession route was well-maintained. The district administration coordinated with various departments to facilitate smooth operations, while the police implemented tight security measures to maintain peace and order throughout the event.

This move by the district administration is seen as a positive step towards boosting religious harmony and respecting cultural traditions. Several high-ranking officials, including Divisional Commissioner Kashmir V K Bidhuri, IGP Kashmir V K Birdi, SMC Commissioner Dr. Owais Ahmed, DC Srinagar Dr. Bilal and SSP Srinagar, participated in the procession to oversee the arrangements and ensure everything proceeded smoothly.

Speaking to the reporters on the occasion, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir stated that all the necessary arrangements were made and the Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar conducted a review of the arrangements yesterday evening to ensure everything was in order.

He attributed the decision to allow the procession to the positive outcomes of the peace process, as all stakeholders had contributed to creating an atmosphere conducive to such a decision.

The Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar, Dr. Bilal, stated that the arrangements for the ongoing procession, which commenced at 5:30 AM, have been well-received.

He said that this marks the second time such a procession has been permitted.The collaborative efforts of the administration and the community have been instrumental in ensuring the success of the event, with provisions such as water distribution, toilets, washrooms, and sprinklers being made available, he said.(KNS)
